Valves are tested for flow rate versus valve opening using a constant pressure drop to determine the valve’s inherent flow characteristic. These are usually categorized as equal percentage, linear or quick opening. Most industrial processes use equal percentage type valves due to how the process varies as the flow varies. Butterfly and ball valves are most often equal percentage type while globe valves can be modified to produce any flow characteristic. Valve is used for controlling fluid flow by changing the size of the flow passage according to the controller and enabling direct control over the flow rate.

In general temperature, regulators are most successful on control applications having slow processes. The valve action refers to the relationship of stem motion to plug and seat position. The movement of the actuator produces the valve action, resulting from a temperature change. The hot fluid is allowed to pass through the shell of the heat exchanger while the cold fluid is allowed to pass through the tube. The equal percentage valve trim is used in throttling applications to control the flow or the pressure of gas and vapor. Once the trim position has been altered, the controller waits for the next measurement from the sensing element to determine the remaining difference to the set point. Valve stems are moved, and the flow is altered until there is no difference between the setpoint and the actual value of the controlled parameter.
There are two basic types of valves; plug and seat valves, where the plug is closed against the seat, or quarter-turn valves that have a disc, ball, or cone turning against the seat. Positioners are designed to take position feedback from the stem or shaft of a valve and deliver the pneumatic pressure to an actuator to open and close the valve. This positioner must be attached to or close to the control valve assembly. Control valves can be used to regulate pressure and/or flow rate automatically, no matter which pressure is used.
